The North East Finance team comprises highly experienced people who have been involved in building, investing in and developing successful innovative businesses.
Our people have expertise in regulatory, legal and tax issues that help to shape the investment industry, as well as a deep understanding of the various European and UK government rules and regulations. The team has a wide range of contacts with venture capital firms and investors across the UK and internationally.
Andrew Mitchell - Chief Executive
Andrew was educated at Oxford and INSEAD. Following an early career in the oil industry, investment banking and management consultancy, he founded and ran his own business for almost 10 years. More recently, he was an executive director and shareholder in one of the UK's most successful university spin-out companies, which was sold in 1997 to a large US corporation.
He also established a £25m venture capital fund - targeted at early stage technology businesses - and has served as a non-executive director for a number of high growth companies. For five years, until 2008 he was chief executive of VC business development company NStar.
Jason Hobbs - Finance Director
Jason graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne with a BA in Economics and Accounting. He is a member of the ICAEW, having qualified as a chartered accountant during his career at Ernst & Young.
After a period at Black & Decker's manufacturing plant in County Durham, Jason joined The Health Clinic, a venture capital backed company specialising in ophthalmology, laser vision correction and other health related services. As Corporate Finance Director, he was a key member of the team that successfully floated the company on the London Stock Exchange, following a period of high growth and a nationwide store opening programme.
Jason worked for Optical Express following its successful takeover of The Health Clinic, before joining North East Finance in June 2004.
Dawn Dunn - Business Development Manager
Dawn has an extensive career of working within public and private sector organisations in North East England, having worked for the regional branch of Merrill Lynch Investment Bank.
She has also worked in private consultancy acting as an executive within a full service communications agency. She has seven years experience of the VC and investment sector after working in an executive role at NStar.
David Malston - Financial Controller
David joined North East Finance as a Financial Accountant in May 2007 to provide financial support to the company. He is a qualified member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and also has a HND in Business and Finance.
Prior to moving to North East Finance David worked as a Management Accountant within two private sector companies in the Care Industry where he gained a wide range of experience, including project management.
He is currently charged with Monitoring and Reporting to Key Stakeholders on the performance of the £125 million Finance for Business Funds.
Alastair Smith - Portfolio Manager
Alastair studied law at Dundee, Edinburgh and Leiden universities. After qualifying as a solicitor, he worked with Scottish law firm Burness, specialising in corporate finance. He advised clients on a range of matters including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, corporate restructuring, regulatory compliance and in particular advised institutional investors, entrepreneurs and management teams on structuring and completing venture capital funding rounds. Alastair then joined Scottish Enterprise where he worked as an investment manager for the Scottish Co-Investment Fund and contributed to the design and implementation of new investment funds.
Alastair was heavily involved in the process of designing and
establishing the £125m Finance for Business North East fund and is
now responsible for overseeing the activities of the fund managers
and monitoring compliance of the funds' activities with the
Stephen Warren - Administrative Assistant
Stephen joined North East Finance in June 2004 after gaining experience in a variety of industries, ranging from engineering to marketing.
Over the last ten years, her has held support and administrative roles in a range of private sector companies such as Eversheds and Ford Motor Company.
North East Finance is seeking to appoint a fund management organisation to take over the management of the investment portfolio of NEF's Finance for Business North East Technology Fund from the current fund manager and, potentially, to manage other venture capital investments from within NEF's portfolio.Read More
